What is a .VN domain name?
.VN is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Vietnam. It is managed by the Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
In the same way that .fr is associated with France, .de with Germany and .jp with Japan, a .vn domain clearly identifies a website as being associated with Vietnam.
According to VNNIC, there are now more than 690,000 active .VN domain names, with both Vietnamese and international registrars providing registration and maintenance services.
What are the benefits of a .VN domain?
There are several reasons why a business operating in Vietnam may choose a .vn domain rather than a generic extension such as .com.
1. A strong Vietnamese identity
A .vn domain immediately communicates a connection with Vietnam. For a local business, this can make the website feel more relevant and familiar to Vietnamese customers.

2. A clear SEO and geotargeting signal
A .vn domain can be useful for SEO when your main target market is Vietnam.
Google considers country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) as strong signals of the country a website is intended to target. A country-specific domain can therefore help Google understand that your website is primarily intended for users in Vietnam.
However, do not mistake this for a ranking boost that automatically puts a .vn website above a .com website. Your content, technical SEO, links, relevance, authority and overall website quality remain far more important to your rankings.
It is entirely possible to operate a successful business in Vietnam using a .com domain. The .vn extension is mainly an additional geographic and branding signal.
3. Better brand protection in Vietnam
If you operate a business in Vietnam, registering your brand under a .vn domain can also help prevent another party from registering the corresponding domain name.
For this reason, we generally recommend considering both the .vn and .com versions of an important brand name when they are available.
Do I legally need a .VN domain to operate a business in Vietnam?
No. There is no general requirement for a business operating in Vietnam to use a .vn domain name for its website.
A company can operate a website using a .com or another generic top-level domain. The choice of domain extension is primarily a question of branding, geographic targeting and business strategy.
It is also important to distinguish the domain name from the location of your hosting. Having a .vn domain does not mean that your website is hosted in Vietnam.
Hosting and data localization are separate legal and technical questions and may be subject to different regulations depending on the nature of the business and the data involved.
Does a .VN domain make a website faster in Vietnam?
No. The domain extension itself does not make your website faster.
Website performance depends primarily on factors such as your hosting infrastructure, server response time, caching, image optimization, code, content delivery network (CDN) and overall technical implementation.
Google uses Core Web Vitals and other page experience and technical signals when evaluating websites, but changing from .com to .vn will not automatically improve these metrics.
Interestingly, Google explicitly states that server location is only one of several signals used to understand a website’s target audience and that it is not a definitive signal.
How to register a .VN domain name
Registering a .vn domain is relatively straightforward, but unlike a generic domain such as .com, you need to use a registrar that is authorized to provide .vn registration services.
The basic process is:
- Choose your domain name and check whether it is available.
- Choose an accredited .VN registrar.
- Complete the required registration information and verification.
- Pay the registration and maintenance fees.
- Activate and configure your domain.

The official VNNIC registration procedure confirms that registrants choose their domain name, select a registrar and complete the applicable registration procedure through an accredited registrar.
How much does a .VN domain cost?
The final price depends on the registrar and the service fees it charges, but the Vietnamese government-regulated registration and maintenance fees provide a useful baseline.
For a standard second-level .vn domain, the current regulated fees are:
- Registration fee: 100,000 VND
- Annual maintenance fee: 350,000 VND
Additional service fees may be charged by the registrar, so the final retail price can be higher.
Other extensions have different regulated fees. For example, .com.vn, .net.vn and .biz.vn have an annual maintenance fee of 250,000 VND, while several specialized extensions have lower fees.
Can foreigners buy a .VN domain name?
Yes. Foreign individuals and organizations can register .vn domain names.
Current VNNIC registration rules distinguish between registrants with an address in Vietnam and those with an address abroad. Registrants located in Vietnam must register through a domestic .VN registrar, while registrants located abroad can use either Vietnamese or overseas .VN registrars.
This means that you do not need to be a Vietnamese citizen to own a .vn domain name.
Do you need a local address in Vietnam to buy a .VN domain?
The answer depends on where the registrant is based.
If you have an address in Vietnam, you must register through a domestic Vietnamese .VN registrar. If you are based outside Vietnam, you can register through either a Vietnamese or an overseas accredited registrar.
In either case, you should expect to provide accurate registrant information and complete the verification process required by the registrar.
Can you anonymously buy a .VN domain?
You should not expect to register a .vn domain anonymously.
VNNIC’s current registration system includes eKYC functionality, allowing registrants to submit the required information and documents electronically.
As with other regulated national domain extensions, providing accurate registrant information is an important part of the registration process.
What are the different .VN domain extensions?
Vietnam offers considerably more than just the standard .vn extension.
The current .VN domain structure includes both second-level domains and third-level domains organized around different sectors and uses. The rules were updated by Circular 48/2025/TT-BKHCN.
.COM.VN
.com.vn is intended for organizations, businesses and individuals and is particularly suitable for commercial and service activities.
.BIZ.VN
.biz.vn is intended for business, production and startup activities. It can be considered as an alternative to .com.vn for commercial projects.
.ORG.VN
.org.vn is intended for organizations and activities in economic, political, cultural and social fields.
.EDU.VN
.edu.vn is intended for organizations operating in education and training.
.GOV.VN
.gov.vn is reserved for central and local government agencies and public service organizations.
.NET.VN
.net.vn is suitable for organizations, businesses and individuals involved in establishing or providing online services.
Other .VN extensions
Other extensions include .int.vn, .ac.vn, .pro.vn, .info.vn, .health.vn, .name.vn, .id.vn, .io.vn and .ai.vn, among others.
Vietnam has also introduced additional extensions such as .ap.vn, .ad.vn and .on.vn, designed for areas including software and mobile applications, advertising and creative services, and online activities and e-commerce.
There are also second-level domains corresponding to Vietnamese administrative areas, although the applicable list has evolved with changes to Vietnam’s administrative structure.
What are the rules for choosing a .VN domain name?
.VN domains generally follow a first-come, first-served principle, subject to protected names, auctioned domains and other specific regulatory restrictions.
A domain name must comply with the applicable Vietnamese regulations. Among other requirements, it must not contain terms that infringe national sovereignty, national interests or security, or violate social ethics and Vietnamese customs.
Domain names must also follow technical formatting rules. They can contain letters from a to z, numbers, Vietnamese characters and hyphens, but a hyphen cannot appear at the beginning or end of a domain name, and two consecutive hyphens are not permitted. Each level can contain no more than 63 characters.
How long can you register a .VN domain?
A .vn domain can currently be registered or renewed for a period of 1 to 50 years.
For businesses, registering the domain for several years can be a convenient way to reduce the risk of accidentally allowing an important domain to expire.
What happens when a .VN domain expires?
According to VNNIC’s current domain life cycle:
- The domain reaches its expiry date.
- For up to 30 days after expiration, the registrant can still renew the domain.
- During this period, the domain may be placed on ServerHold if it has not been renewed.
- After 30 days, the domain can no longer be renewed and enters the withdrawal process.
- Between approximately day 31 and day 45 after expiration, the domain is withdrawn and may eventually become available for new registration.
Because losing a domain can also mean losing email addresses, website traffic and brand visibility, businesses should always keep their domain registration information and renewal dates under control.
Are .VN domain names protected by trademark law?
Registering a trademark and registering a domain name are two different things.
VNNIC’s domain dispute policy makes it clear that the .VN domain system operates under its own rules. A trademark owner should therefore not assume that registering a trademark automatically gives them the corresponding .vn domain name.
For businesses, this is another reason why it can be useful to secure important domain names early, ideally alongside the relevant trademark protection.
How are .VN domain disputes handled?
Disputes involving .vn domain names are handled under Vietnamese law.
Depending on the circumstances, disputes can be resolved through:
- Negotiation and conciliation
- Arbitration
- Court proceedings
VNNIC’s published dispute policy states that domain disputes can involve situations where a domain is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark or brand in which the claimant has legitimate rights, where the registrant has no legitimate interest, or where the domain is being used in bad faith.

Should you choose .VN or .COM for a business in Vietnam?
There is no universal answer. The right choice depends on your target market and long-term strategy.
A .vn domain makes particular sense if:
- Vietnam is your primary market.
- Your customers are mainly Vietnamese.
- You want a strong Vietnamese brand identity.
- You want a clear geographic signal for Google and users.
- You want to protect your brand in the Vietnamese domain space.
A .com domain may be preferable if:
- You target customers in several countries.
- You are building an international brand.
- You want a globally recognized domain extension.
- Your business strategy is not specifically focused on Vietnam.
For a business whose main market is Vietnam, owning both the .vn and .com versions can be a sensible strategy when both are available and affordable.
Final thoughts: Is a .VN domain worth it?
If Vietnam is an important market for your business, a .vn domain is definitely worth considering.
It provides a clear Vietnamese identity, sends a strong geographic signal to search engines, and can help reinforce trust and brand recognition among local users. But it should not be considered an SEO shortcut: a .vn domain alone will not make a poorly optimized website rank well.
